Interesting piece of trivia, here's the answer from wikipedia
The 1916 season of the VFL saw just four teams competing, due to World War I. This led to the anomaly of Fitzroy having the distinction of winning both the wooden spoon and the premiership in the same year, finishing 4th out of 4 but progressing through to the Grand Final in the final four finals system and winning that match.
Also: In 1916, the VFL competition consisted of four teams of 18 on-the-field players each, with no "reserves", although any of the 18 players who had left the playing field for any reason could later resume their place on the field at any time during the match.

not even going to look at the 4 answers above me, i would say it would be something to do with only 4 teams participating in the league that season, due to world war 1, also, now i could be wrong, but i think the 4th placed side actually won the grand final, and i think that was fitzroy, if i'm wrong, i'm wrong but is that what you were asking?
edit- to the yank up there, mate you're wrong, not sure where you got your info but the years you name were not cancelled, 43, we won the flag, 44 fitzroy won beat the tigers,42, essendon beat us too. the other years, i know that collingwood won in '17.
you must of read your info wrong, they suspended the brownlow medal from '42-'45.
(no need for the thumbs down to the yank though boys and girls)

Just read on BF that Carlton dominated the H&A season and got beaten in the Grand Final. The others are right though, Fitzroy won the Premiership and Wooden Spoon in the same year.

Fitzroy won both the wooden spoon and the premiership in the same year. They finished 4th out of 4 but made it through to the Grand Final.

The seasons in 1916, 1917, 1942, 1943, and 1944 were suspended due to war.

The team that finished last on the ladder won the flag in the same year? (I think it was Fitzroy?)

the team that finished last won the flag, cos there were only 4 teams then, becasue of the war
