When is pretension validated?
or should it always be considered a character flaw? what should be more prevalent in society, the admiration of humility or the validity of pretension?

macro... I understand what you are getting at, and agree, but the drive to be a good person would be stifled even more in modern society, if some loose definitions of right and wrong (or the attempt to be “for others” vs. the attempt to act for yourself only) were not defined and valued as the correct thing to do.

It is a character flaw that should not be validated as validating this would only enhance the degree of this untoward behaviour. Pretension is validated when one chooses to validate it.

I'm not sure how pretence could be validated....
I'm a big believer and letting people be who they choose or want to be...and if its a manner which grates on me or bothers me in any way - I simply ignore it. Afterall, who am I to judge how a person acts, as long as they are not acting in a way that is harmful to me or others.
As for humility? More often than not - its false humility anyway. So again - I just ignore it...

The is a saying about there being no bad beer and it is the same with people. The trouble is that in order to really understand why the offensive person is that way you need to stand in his/her shoes. And that is not always possible, you will not often be able to see it fully from his/her viewpoint. Be humble but don't stand for nonsence do to the nature of the other person, there are reasonable limits.
So it is my claim that "the fault (dear Brutus) is not in our stars but in ourselves, that we are underlings" (with apologies to Bill Shakeaspere for quoting from Julius Ceasar out of context!).

1. There is a valid use for every tool in life.
2. Every tool has its place - judgement should be reserved for the tool user whose responsibility it is when using the tool.
3. Neither - admiration & validation, I do not think, are comparable - both have essential roles in mankind.
