How can I get my dog to calm down around strangers?

I have a 20 month old terrier mix that is a GREAT dog except that he gets too excited around guests. He won't stop jumping on them. I've resorted to placing him in his crate because he's too hyper to control. Even though he's not allowed on the sofa, he'll jump into the guest's lap and try to lick them in the face. I've tried sound aversion ("ah ah", "bad dog", clapping hands, whistle, etc.), ignoring him, and a shock collar. Nothing has worked yet. We've even had guests complain about his crazy behavior. Just a side note, he doesn't act this way with our family - only guests. And he's calm after being placed in the crate.

We have one like that. We are working on training our dog to settle down around other people. I recommend teaching him the 'Settle' command. You can start by holding him and telling him to 'Settle' when he stops squirming give him a treat and tell him 'Good Settle'. Eventually you can get him to 'settle' on the floor with out having to hold him. It may help some but odds are like ours he will still be overly excited when other people visit. I recommend having a friend come over and ring the door bell and not let him/her come in until the dog 'settles'. It takes a while but it has been helping ours.

    Good Luck!

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUSVC

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Your dog needs both additional socialization and training for this issue. As you are working on training, it would be helpful for you to have your friends (who your dog doesn't know) to be involved in training exercises. Have them come to the door, enter, all while you are training your dog to either sit or settle. Practice over and over again and eventually you will not only get your dog trained but you will also have the advantage of additional socialization for your dog. If you get frustrated working on this issue on your own, you can also enlist the assistance of a dog trainer to help with this specific issue at your home.
