In 3d Studio Max, Is selection by shade possible?

lets say i have a material that is exactly 4 shades of grey, and it is mapped to an irregular, organic model. is it possible to select or detach only one shade, ie, the whitest or darkest shade, etc.? I need to separate models into their color elements after having already mapped them.

If it is a single material, no. The program can only distinguish between transparent and opaque areas on a single material, not recognise different colours.

If you only need to detach them a single time, you'll just have to select the correct areas by polygon, vert etc., and detach them manually. If you want to be able to select the different areas whenever you like, manually select the polygons with each shade mapped to them and assign them a material ID (scroll down the main rollout menu to find the material ID type-in). Select all the polys (or verts, etc) that are one shade and set them to ID 1, select those of the next shade and set them to ID 2, etc. Then you can use the "select by material ID" box next to it to select the groups mapped to each colour when you need them.

    Hope this was helpful. :)
