Bigger Olympic story - Phelps winning career total of 10 medals OR India winning its first indiv. gold medal?

My Answer: India winning it's first individual gold medal. He is a hero to a billion people - didn't see that one coming. Phelps achievements really don't mean much to me. He is an American athelete who was predicted to do really well, and is doing well in the Olympics - big deal, no offense on Phelps accomplishments. **YAWN** (and this is an American speaking)

What about you good people?

Well! The Americans are in a habit of winning medals. They have been doing this since long.

For an Indian to win a medal despite lack of government support, high corruption in selection process, lack of any facilities to sports persons and political will ruling over the talent, it is a rare and wonderful surprise that at least one Gold medal has been won.

Further, Abhinav Bhindra, the Indian gold medalist winner in shooting, had suffered a serious injury to his spine in 2006 which made it impossible to even hold the rifle leave alone to shoot it. Through sheer will power and practice he cam out of his problem and has won the Gold now.

I think if India won their first individual gold medal would be great! Earlier today (in USA) Togo won their first medal (congrats!) in Kayaking, a bronze medal. I was very proud of the guy, he did a good job, even for a bronze.

Although i'm a huge fan of Phelps, I do agree with you. Lots of American athletes have, in a way, bigger chances to win. Places like India, Togo, Romania, lots of poor countries don't get a chance in the Olympics like the US. Did you watch the opening cermony? 647 athletes from the USA, the most! And a small African country only had 2 :(

In the news, Phelps would have a much bigger Olympic story. But I would like to see countries with less of a chance winning gold, silver or even bronze.

from my childhood i used to hear the news of an american or russian winning a individual gold medals at olympics. But an indian winning a gold medal in an individual event is a news most unexpected and very surprising one too. So according to me success story of our hero "ABHINAV BINDRA" is a big news of olympics-2008 although i do congrats the american for winning 10 gold medals. It is a heroic performance no doubt it and no question about it. He deserves all the honour and pride but please pardon us because Abhinav is the first indian to win a gold medal in an individual event in the history of olympics.

Yes - you are right. INDIA winning its first gold medal matters the most b'coz Phelps was sure to win but not INDIA.

I'm sure all of India (and one yank) are celebrating the fact that India have won gold, but for the vast, vast majority of the planet I reckon Phelps is the big story!!
