Question about a term used in Canada?

So my best friends mom came back from a trip to Canada, and she was telling us that the word Goof, was not a nice term in Canada. Can anyone tell me what this means? Also Sorry if this offends anyone. I'm just very curious about this.

It's only a mild put down. As in "That guy's a bit of a goof" To 'goof' means to make an error, so if you call someone that they are generally doing something silly and showing off in the process.Like Bob's mooning Mrs. O'Brian the librarian again! On what a goof!!!" Or someone you can't take seriously. Like "Paris Hilton is a total goof." Now "goofing off" means having fun and not working when one is supposed to be. We went to the beach and goofed off instead of studying. Or coming up with a suggestion that's silly. "No, we can't ride unicycles in the sand-don't be so goofy!" And there you have it!

Unlike Alew I have yet to see it used to portray a sex offender...could be new...
