IS HONG KONG A COUNTRY OR NOT?!?

So me and my friends were talking and for whatever reason I thought the following:

Beijien is in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a country.

then someone told me Hong Kong is a city in China, just like Beijieng is a city.

and now, someone just said it was a country

Someone tell me the truth!

I'm confused!

Hong Kong is a city in China, but Hong Kong is a small territory thats its own country. Hong Kong is a small area thats a city that borders China. Hong Kong is on the south east end of China near the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean

Wow some people are rude on here. This is a commonly asked question, actually because Hong Kong is special in terms of it's status. It is essentially a "region" in China, similar to a province in Canada or a state in the US, but with some differences too..."China controls Hong Kong's foreign and defence policies, but the territory has its own currency and customs status." It's kind of like the Vatican having it's own laws and governances separate from the rest of Italy, while it retains some status as a regular city.

So, to the asker, think of Hong Kong as a large state or province with a lot more political independence, similar to that of a country but still under China's rule. (Years ago, Hong Kong was actually a British Colony, under British rule. So it's borders became like that of a country. When Hong Kong gained independence from Britain it didn't want to go completely under Chinese rule so some 'special rules' were created. Bejing is the capital city of Hong Kong AND China.

  • An administrative region of southeast China on the coast southeast of Guangzhou, including Hong Kong Island and adjacent areas. Hong Kong Island was occupied by the British during the Opium War (1839–1842) and ceded to them by the Treaty of Nanking (1842). Other portions of the colony were acquired in 1860 and in 1898 by a 99-year lease. A free port and important center of international commerce and banking for most of the 20th century, Hong Kong reverted to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. Victoria is the capital. Population: 6,980,000.

Hong Kong has been a special administrative district of China since it was given back by the UK in 1999.That means it has many laws and political privileges that do not exist elsewhere in China.

Beijing is the capitol city of China.
