I love the D40 I have that and a D300 and I still often grab the D40. but both are good cameras. Do to places like kenrockwell.com and DPreview.com then go to the camera stores and see which one works for you. With either one you can be happy

The Nikon D40 is really a great camera, but you should go to a store and hold both in your hand before you decide which one you want. One of the most important aspects of buying a camera that doesn't usually get enough attention is ergonomics. If you don't like the camera feels in your hands, then you will not use it as much. You should also consider that if you are very serious about photography then you will probably eventually want some more lenses, also you will probably want another camera upgrade at some point. You are not just buying one camera when you get an SLR, you are buying into a system. Take your time and choose the system that best fits your current and future needs, and remember lenses are more important than cameras.

I'd pass on either the Canon Rebel or Nikon D40 since they are not real bargain full-featured DSLRs. A far better bargain with more useful features such as a live action LCD viewing screen, image stabilization built into the body, etc. is the Consumer Report highly rated Olympus Evolt E-510 which sells for around $670.00 and that includes two lenses at samy.com.
Good luck!

Do yourself a favor. Look at the Sony Alpha 100 or their Alpha 200. The steady shot is built into the body so your lenses are cheaper. This camera line is a direct descendant from the Minolta SLR's and produce phenomenal results. If you question the value of steady shot, I offer you this, I frequently shoot indoors without a flash so I can catch truly candid moments and my shots have been down to 1/10 of a second and you can read the text of a book sitting on a table. I believe you can still get an Alpha100 refurbed body from www.sonyselect.com for under $400.00 and my 28-200mm Tamron Lens only cost me $89 brand new.
Just my advice.

I would buy both. Try them out for a week and see which one you like better.
