Pain with temporary crown?

Two & 1/2 years ago, I had a crown. It was so sensitive that they never permanently glued it down. However, it finally quit hurting, but they didn't take it out since the temp. glue was holding it. It fell out a couple months ago, and then after they permanently glued it on, the porcelain shattered. So, today they removed it, replaced it with a temporary crown and I'm awaiting the NEW permanent crown. It now hurts when I bite down (on soft foods). I'm concerned that I will go thru the misery I did the first time. Has anyone had this before? I had a crown on the bottom jaw and had no difficulties, but the top tooth was miserable last time, and now it's hurting to bite again.

Update:

I had a great dentist. He did 4 crowns, and only had problems with this one. Now, I'm seeing someone else since the other doctor ventured out on his own in another town. I think the porcelain shattered because when it came out unexpectedly, I bit it and I think it weakened it (yes, they should have seen that, and are not making me pay my copay for this one)

My pain is only when I bite down on food. I've only eaten softer foods, rice, cooked veggies, tortilla, ground beef and some small pieces of chicken--nothing hard at all. It's not too high as my bite is fine.

It could be a number of things. The temporary crown could be too high causing your occlusion (bite) to be off. The temporary could be impinging on the gum tissue below it, or if they prepared the tooth with burs/drill you could have sensitivity or possibly pulpitis. If you can describe the symptoms of pain in more detail that would help. For example: when does it hurt? does the tooth hurt or do the gums hurt? Does it hurt spontaneously? does it wake you up at night? Is it a sharp pain or a dull, aching pain? Did they use burrs to prepare the tooth a little for this new crown?

My temporary crowns hurt as the were a bit too long, I went back to my dentist who shortened the acrylic by .5mm where it went into the gingiva margins (the curve of the gum where it meets the tooth) instead of to the collar/shoulder ( prepared cut edge on the enamel to take the crown) One of my temporary crowns did keep coming of until my porcelain crowns were fitted but they were a little sensitive for 2 days after the final fitting of the porcelains. The pain could be from the anaesthetic wearing of, if it is really bad still in 24hrs ring your dentist and talk to them.

for extremely sensitive dentine/ tooth, or if the tooth has been afflicted with irreversible pulpitis, you may have to undergo a root canal treatment procedure. this will eliminate your pain. only then can you get a crown made for your tooth. Please go to a good prosthodontist in your area who is an expert in making fixed prosthesis like crown and bridges. ceramic shattering at the time of fixing points to the fact that the prosthesis was not made properly. Surprisingly you are continuing with the same person who has been unable to give relief to you since last 2 years. Dentistry is a very predictable science and there is no question of taking a chance. The diagnosis has to be sound before initiation of actual therapy.
