4 kings, 4 queens, 4 aces,4 jacks, 4 of each number 2-10 and 2 jokers for a total of 54 cards. (1 of each for each suit clubs, diamonds, spades, and hearts.)except jokers which are not always used.

4 kings, 4 queens, 4 aces, 4 jacks...one of each suit-- a spade of each, a diamond of each, a heart of each and a club of each!

There are 4 of every card! and 13 suits total! 13x4= 52

The modern playing cards evolved from the Taroca - (Tarot) These 'ranks' are possibly linked to chess - but in cards the 'moves' are hidden; in chess moves are clearly seen. In the Tarot- the joker = The Fool represents the innocent journeyman through life (hmm journey woman-- must be PC!!) however symbolism (esoteric) should not be confused with symbolism (historic) - In that the costumes of the modern court cards are C16th- thus any Queen resembles Mary or Cathrine of Aragon or even Jane Seymour
