I need help with a computer not allowing network connection?

I got cable internet today and I hooked my laptop up with any problems. But I can't get the desktop to get the signal. When I click on connect, it says: "Windows is unable to connect to selected network, the network may not be in range. Please refresh the list of networks and try again." But it's showing up everytime I click refresh. I do have a router and I do have it secured network. HELP! I am so lost!!

Update:

It is a motorola wireless card.

Update 2:

Yes, its broadcasting, and I'm using my laptop right now. I have had this router up and working a year ago, so I know it works. I may need to reformat that computer, but I really don't want to do it.

I also tried to connect it when it was unsecure! Did not work.

a wireless router? is your router broadcasting? is this your first wireless device? make sure your network isnt broadcasting in a wrong channel or type and make sure your type of security is compatible. try turning off security and see if it picks it up.make sure you are using the correct device when searching for networks. make sure there isnt a wireless button on your keyboard that shuts the card on and off(popular flaw, look for LED)

edit:is your card compatible with network type? ex:G, B, N

    dont format

you go through add hardware wizard?

    It is on?

maybe your wifi card is accessing with a shared network or somebody is accessing it, try to edit your wifi profiles to fix it.
