why do they race in lanes 2-9 instead of 1-8?

i was watching the atletics and noticed this

    Apparently it's because lane 1 suffers more wear and tear from all of the other races. It was decided it would be fairer to the sprinters if lanes 2-9 were used, so all are a level playing field, so to speak.

    I initially though it was to do with the Steeplechase - the innermost lane got wet after the water jump, making it unfair for whoever drew Lane 1. But has there been a Steeplechase event tonight??

    It probably has something to do with equalizing the distance runners have to cover... that is why they have the staggered starts.
