Bulimia, anorexia, laxative abuse, or what??
My question is very serious, so please only serious answers?
I have a friend, who for the past 3 months, has been trying to lose weight. She has been on a very low calorie diet, with lots of excercise, but there are times when she is at a party or something, where she is forced to eat cake, or pizza, or such. She then takes a laxative, Dulcolax, in order to get rid of the food.
my questions are 1. does this friend have an eating disorder and which one
and 2.,what long term effects with these laxatives have on her?
thank you so much

It sounds to me like she does. This sounds like anorexia and one of the ways she gets rid of the food is to poop it out instead of throw it up. The laxatives are going to ruin her body. Number one after a while one laxative doesn't work so you have to use more...etc etc a continuous cycle. This is going to cause major problems with her bowels and stomach the same way bulimics have problems with their stomach and throat and teeth. I would talk to her about it and if she doesn't listen you have to get professionals involved. Good luck!

There are usually two parts two bulimia. The binge, and the purge. The binge is when a person eats a massive amount of food in a short period of time, and the purge is when they get rid of it, either through self-induced vomiting, or exercise, laxatives, or fasting. So, non-purging bulimia is when someone will binge and eat a lot, but not try to get rid of it. This is also known as BED, binge eating disorder. I've never heard of a purge type anorexia, but I'm guessing that they would eat very little, but throw that up. The main difference is that bulimics will eat a TON of food, and anorexics will eat not nearly as much. You are correct, when you throw it up, you're bulimic, and when you starve you're anorexic. But, these two disorders are so closely related, that it's not uncommon for a person to have both, and go back and forth between bulimic and anorexic behaviors.

it sounds like she has bulimia. if she had anorexia, she would get really nervous around food and would not eat very much at all. i would encouarge her (or force her) to go to the doctor before it gets too serious. i'm not a doctor, but i know some stuff about eating disorders.
