We all have our own ideas of which bike is the best. Most major makers are putting out safe, reliable bikes at a reasonable price. You have to decide the size and style and let us know before we can give the advice. But, there is no singular one bike that is the best, unless it is mine. My opinion, though.
Good luck.

The best bike is : Looks, the one you take care of, Comfort, the one that fits you the best (don't buy something that your not comfortable sitting on moving around manually ect.) mileage all depends on the conditioons you ride in and how well maintained your bike is sooooo
the best bike is The one you take care of.

Personally my Suzuki Bandit 1200 k6 is the best bike I've ever owned. It's easy to pimp up, spares are two a penny, it goes like stink, it handles, it stops, its comfy and the motor is virtually bullet proof and for £4100 brand new on the road can't be beaten for value in my book. I'm a lanky 6' 3" and fits me perfectly.

i personally like the kaw zx11's, im 6ft3, and the bike is very comfortable for me.
it is completely a personal choice, goto your local dealer, look around, and see what you like, then try the bike, to see if you still like it, buying a bike on just the looks, is a great way to waste money.
if the dealer wont let you test ride it, walk away to another dealer who will (and dont get stupid when test driving it)
when i first test drove a zx6, i was gone for over a hour, the zx11 about 45 minutes for the first one, and the second one, about 30 minutes.
if you have any doubts that you dont like the bike, dont try to "convince" yourself youll get used to it, then its not the right bike for you, try another one.
most legit shops will tell you plain out if they think it will be the wrong bike for you (a busa/zx11 for someone who just got a license is just plain stupid)
