Opinion on this type of memory? Open minded people only, please.?

It's very strange, but this is a weird way of putting it...

Lets say my memory is two boxes. My front box is what i am thinking about directly. The back is what's wandering around the back of my mind, not concentrating on it. I remember things best if both have the same thing, but i'm a little distracted.

With dreams, whatever is in the back box is what i will dream about... if it's also in my front box, i can control the dream; a lucid dream, where you know you know you not in reality.

Thing is, i have a lot of nightmares where i am conscious of the lack of reality, but no matter how much i shout at myself to wake up, i FEEL pain in my dream, but i can also feel my warm bed. Anyway, back to the memory topic, because they ARE related.

How's this: i went on holiday when i was 6 years old (i am now 14) stood up on a stage, and i can now remember exactly where i was sitting, the pattern of the chairs, lighting, people, and the face, location and name of every person who got introduced on stage (children in a competition). I can remember my entry number, what i said, and how i danced. But other times, NOW i can pick something up, memorise a page, put it down for 5 minutes and completely forget where i put it. I can look at a phone number, 11 digits, and most of the time remember it after 20 seconds. But other times i can write something over and over again and it just doesn't stick... say i'm doing a maths formula, and the teacher writes some problems on the board for homework, expecting us to memorise the formula. I can remember all of the 20 questions, but i can't remember the actual formula.

Does anyone else have this type of memory? It scares me sometimes. Open minded people only please, no abuse because i only want advice... No i am not insane, i'm perfectly fine, and open about the paranormal ^_^

Update:

No i am not autistic, i am brilliant with people and my memory only works with certain things... And i am better at English than Maths, even though it's very close. If that's a point, anyway.

Update 2:

Well, thanks a lot, Sting Ray. If you have no opinion why the hell did you answer? Looks like an opinion to me.

Well, I am considerably older than you (53) but I think my memory works like yours does. My family and friends are astounded at how clearly I can remember the most intimate details of my childhood (I can remember my grandmother holding me as an infant - I remember the feel of her skin, the sound of her voice, her scent, and what it felt like to be held by her) but I can't find my keys; I forget what I said to people yesterday, I have trouble putting events in sequence when they happened only weeks or months ago.

My biggest problem is that my dreams are so lucid and detailed, that sometimes I have trouble differentiating between dreams and reality - "Wait - did this happen or did I dream it? " and I just don' t know the answer.

And yes, like you, there are some details like number sequences or specific things that I will remember forever and ever, and other, seemingly similar things, that I can write down again and again and not know. I can rememer everyone's cell phone number in my family except my son's - what's that about?

I have no answer except to say that you are not alone, and you are (hopefully) not insane. Everyone is different - you are who you are and you remember what you remember.

A very wise man once said (and I'm paraphrasing here), "When you fear that you are alone and insane, the discovery of a mind that thinks like yours is nothing short of a blessed event".

I hope I have helped you.

I have just completed a psychology course and can tell you one thing, when it comes to the mind, memory and dreaming there are more theories and viewpoints as to their nature than would be possible to list here! Some would say that your feeling of a two-part memory is normal and healthy according to their theory whilst others would not. However, despite what they may or may not think, your own mind certainly shouldn't scare you! It is an incredible thing. For example, your description of your holiday sounds like a 'photographic' memory. Many people report being able to remember highly detailed and vivid memories of past events. Were you perhaps very excited or very nervous at the prospect of this competition? Some psychologists argue that high levels of emotion when in a certain situation leads to a stronger memory of it. Others would say something different. In other words nobody can seem to agree on what exactly memory is or how it works and this is the same for dreaming, so try not to worry, you sound perfectly normal to me : )

I cannot comment on your dreams because I know nothing about the subject.

What I can tell you is you have a short term memory and a long term memory. The short term memory is smaller than the long term and so it can actually fill to capacity if you are studying intensely over a period of time and that's when putting a book down and forgetting where you put it happens. The long term memory is not as chaotic and only stores things of long term importance, hence you can remember all those when you was 6 years old.

There is nothing abnormal with what you say, the majority of people experience it, some learn to cope with it, some don't even know it's happening and others know they can remember things from long ago but struggle with things they have learnt recently.

I hope this helps with, at least part of your question.

That was a very interesting way to explain it. Very good!

This is my thoughts on this. We have certain memories like childhood memories that may stick with us for ever. I'm am 46 and can remember some things from childhood as if they happen yesterday. One of my sisters that I talked to about an event remembers nothing. She was right next to me the whole time. Other events she will bring up I have no recollection of the event.

About the dreams, sometimes I have dreams like that, I'm awake but dreaming. That's the only way I can explain it. It usually happens when I'm real tired and over stressed.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Some subjects in school maybe tougher then others or maybe your work load is to much. So relax you'll get the hang of it.

Take care and don't give up!

    I thought I was crazy.

Seirously, that's pretty much defines my brain.

    I always have that problem.

I actually had a dream that I got shot, and I woke up screaming. And forced my parents to take me to the hospital, because I had this strong pain in my chest and it felt like I was shot. But the nurse said nothing was wrong.

    Weird, isn't it?

And the whole question thing happens to me too.

And you seirously have no idea how happy I am that you posted this question. Because I thought I was crazy, up until you poseted on Y!A, this .

So thanl-you soo much. Seriously. =]

This one dream I had, I was in China, and everybody starts running like crazy, so I tried to to call my husband, but I couldn't put the numbers down on the phone. I knew the number, but my fingers wouldn't let me dial it the way I wanted to. I woke up punched my husband in the back of the head and went back to sleep. I was MAD.

and this other dream I had got an office job sat in my chair, I was spinning around and couldn't stop spinning, I woke up sick.

and my stair dream, I would fall down stairs, and my husband said i was shaking. and i always pull a muscle

That sounds like the same kind of memory everyone else has, we all remember some things and then forget others. I believe it depends on the kinds of distractions that you are experiencing that makes you forget certain things. I think you are normal in memory.

It scares me how lucid you are for a fourteen year old, but to answer your question, it seems that you are fixating too much on these things and you need to try and relax.

In addition I would suggest that you are too young to get involved with lucid dreaming( the "in" name for astral projection) as this has its dangers.

    Good luck.

You're right, you're not insane. I think you should talk to your doctor about this because he may know something about this. Do you ever kind of daydream but then when you try to daydream you can't? That happens to me. I am a tiny bit paranoid but mostly because I have read many scary stories and seen scary things and now I see things. I really think you should talk to your doctor about this. Just consider it. Thanks for taking the time to read this! Hope I helped!
