General question about the NY Yankees?

Doing a little bio and I'm coming upon some language I didn't expect, so I will have to rely on Bronx fans to set me straight.

Is referring to a player as a Yankee correct? So I could say, "Reggie Jackson was a Yankee in the 1970s" but "Reggie Jackson played for the Yankees"?

And, then, "George Steinbrenner is the owner of the Yankees," but "Yankee owner George Steinbrenner . . ." or "Yankees owner . . . "?

    The first question is correct. And the second question is "Yankees owner".

    You can say Reggie Jackson was a player for the Yankees or Reggie Jackson was a Yankee.

    But in reference to George Steinbrenner, he is to be referred to as the Yankees owner. (Actually, he's the managing general partner.)
