two boxer questions.?

Ok, tomorrow I am thinking about getting a boxer pup for my birthday. I have 2 questions. this male's mother is 70lbs, and the father is between 85 to 100lbs (breeder not sure) which I believe is a little bigger than average for a boxer. what do you think about this other than, yes, i realize this one will most likely be bigger than average. good bad just personal preference, what?

Also, I asked if I could meet the parents and the breeder told me the father was shy. When I go out to the yard he'll most likely go into his dog house and hide. Is this a good or bad trait for his offspring? or for the dog anyway? why do you think he's like this and could mine be so shy that he don't wanna go out around people? b/c I will raise him inside but hope to take him out to the park and things and show him off. thanks

The fact that the father is shy, is a bad thing.. It's also bad that the so called ' breeder ' keeps her dogs in the yard in dog houses.

Check into those things that boxers are prone to, health wise.. Heart, etc.. and check to see if she tests her dogs prior to breeding them. I'll bet she doesn't if she has them living outside in dog houses. RED FLAG.

  • The size doesn't really affect a dog's quality as a pet. The boxer's AKC breed standard says that overall appearance is more important than size, so even perfect show dogs can vary. Shyness, however, is a major issue. Boxers are somewhat wary of strangers, but they should never be shy. This could be passed to the puppies, but remember that half their DNA comes from the mother. Look for a puppy that seems more outgoing, but not aggressive.

Definetely not a good sign that the father is "shy". If you do end up getting this pup, make sure you enrole in obedience classes, as many as you can get your hands on, and do as much as you can to build the dogs confidence. This doesn't mean coddling and spoiling... a confident dog is a dog that knows what's expected of it, and can do those things with confidence.

Socialization will also be very important... continue these confidence building exercises, and expose your pup/dog to as many new situations as you can without overloading or stressing it. Work with a trainer to learn how to teach your dog to handle new situations with confidence.

I'm not sure what the breed standard says for height/weight of boxers.

There are lots of good boxer breeders.

You don't need to take a BIG chance with a shy sire.

If you're old enough to have a dog then be mature enough to hold off your birthday present until you have a chance to search out some good breeders.

A good pup and a questionable pup cost the same.

When you have a puppy you can train that dog anyway that you like no matter what the breed is or who the parents are...just like a child when it's small, it can be molded into the way that you would like your child to act....children and puppies are not that much different...as long as you expose your puppy to people and other animals, you will be fine....I have a boxer and she is absolutly the best dog in the world...i raised her with patience, love, and obedience and she is good with everyone including babies, other animals and people...good luck on your decision about your dog and have a happy birthday...

Go for it ! We have two Boxers and love them to death,They are a great family dog and are very loyal and friendly . As far as being shy because the dad is ,that all depends on how you train your dog. Our boxers have been around people all of their lives ,they love people. We have two females one is fawn a big girl 95lbs.and 9 years old. The younger one, reversed brindle beautiful girl 3 years, old and 55 lbs. We are looking to breed her soon. Most dogs act like puppy's until about 2, that is nothing to worry about . They do like to run and play , just make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercises. Good Luck. I know you'll love it.!

bigger isn't always better when it comes to dogs

being that he is larger than normal, he is more likely to develop hip displasia (sp?) and all sorts of other joint issues

a shy boxer is really not normal

boxers are supposed to be very happy dogs that are anxious for human attention (or atleast every one I've ever been around has been)

it really all comes down to how you raise the dog.. your puppy might be predisposed to shyness, but if you socialize him thoroughly, bring him to the park, to the gas station, to petsmart, introduce him to tons of people (don't forget to introduce him to different races, too, so you don't end up with a 'racist' dog! it does happen!!!) and don't forget to introduce him to tons of different dogs!

if you do everything right you will end up with a confident, happy, healthy, well rounded dog

oh yeah.. and don't forget about puppy classes!

You can socialize your dog so that it isn't afraid of people. If you take it for walks and expose it to people and other dogs when it is young you won't have to worry about that.
