Are there enough events/gold medals left that the USA could catch China in the Gold Medal count?
The USA is about 17 Gold Medals behind the Chinese. Are there enough events and gold medals left to be awarded that the USA could actually catch up to China? Or is that no longer a possibility?
Slimthing, it's a legitimate question to which you obviously have no clue. So why bother answering? I am not worried about "winning" a gold medal count, therefore no reason to rest.
I simply wanted to know how many gold medal events were left and if it was possible for the USA to catch up.

It's mathematically possible, but not realistically possible. Everything needs to be better than perfect for the U.S., and worse case scenarios for all of China's events. It's basically asking the U.S.'s athletes to pull off upset after upset, with each upset having the magnitude of Japan's upset over the U.S. in softball.

There were still 45 golds left today at the start of the games. But it is impossible for US to catch China in gold medals.

There is definitely enough Gold out there for America to catch up. But there is no way we will get enough of those Gold to surpass China in the end. So China will take home the Gold for these Olympics.

Don’t think so, US is no longer dominating athletic, US has a high chance to get gold from Women’s football, women’s volleyball and Men’s/women’s basketball. But Chinese still have a few golds to come, such as table tennis and Men’s diving. US will earn more gold than China in the last few days for sure but not likely to catch up. The final result should be China near 50 US near 40.

There are still around 60 medal events remaining.
The math tells us that the possibility exists, but given the type of events that are left, it's more likely that China will actually expand the difference.

First of all, according to the International Olympics Committee, medal count always starts with gold medals first, then silver and bronze. There is definitely a tight competition here between USA and China. Even though China is leading 20 - 10 now, USA is much better than China in track and field. Also there are many more medals up for grab in swimming, where USA dominates. It's hard to guess until the last day of the game.
