I am having some trouble with opening a document that I created in WordPad.?

The document by default opens in Microsoft Word when I open it. I recently cut and pasted the document into my new flash drive to transfer it to my laptop. When I opened the document in Word while on my laptop, the document came out as just rectangular symbols. I never moved the document from the flash drive, so I tried opening it again on my computer through the flash drive, and the same thing happened. I was wondering if the fact that I have Microsoft Word 2003 on my computer and Microsoft Word 2007 on my laptop has anything to do with this. What can I do to decode this gibberish?

Update:

The document is a "Rich Text Format" document.

I once had the same problem. If you created the document in microsoft works or word pad and try to transfer it or open it using microsoft word, microsoft word wont be able to read the file. So it only shows symbols. I didnt fix the problem myself but you have to somehow change the document to a word document. I wish i could remember how i did it but i cant remember. Sorry.
