Is there limit on horsepower to be street legal?

Can anybody help me settle an argument. My friend says that to be street legal a car can't exceed 600 horsepower. I say there is no limit you can have 1000 if if you want.

Update:

Isn't there supposed to ba car made by Bugatti with a 16 cylinder 1000 horsepower engine? It costs $1.2 million and goes 0 to 60 in less than 4 seconds. (The only production car that can beat a Tesla to 60 MPH.) and it is supposed to be street legal.

there are certain fuels that cannot be run on the street, but if you're running pump gas, and pass emissions, you can have as much horsepower as you want...(or can squeeze out of your engine)

There are no limits for horse power per se but they can and do limit what kind of fuel, emissions and how much fun you can have with your horse power.

There are lots of exotic cars with over 600 horse power--your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

Have you heard of an Enzo? 651 hp.

    How 'bout a Murcielago LP640? it's called a 640 because of it's horse power (642 hp technically)

Both 50 state street legal cars and there are many many more with even more ridiculous power than that.

No limits, but a streetable engine is nice.

No use having a 10,000 horsepower engine that peaks on a race track at 9,000 RPMs when you are only operating at 2,000 RPMS on the road.

That's a car that will stall at any stop sign.

What does it matter. With 1000 HP you'll still get a ticket if you exceed the speed limit, and the gas mileage will; be pathetic. (Really dude, Don't you think that kind of a car would be a definite cop magnet?)

officially it varies by state, but at 600 he is wrong there are alot of street legal cars over 600HP, I believe the fastest or at least was the fastest is the Mclarin F1 with 627 BHP. Im sure there are better at this point.

I'm pretty sure any HP is street legal..it's like race tuned gas that is illegal to use on the streets.

    Something like that.
