Are the Java updates important?

I frequently use java programs (games, websites) and I want to know if its safe to delete the updates or which ones are useful and which ones are not.

I wanted to delete the java updates on my computer since every update is a big file. Will my other java update (the very recent one) be affected if I deleted the previous updates?

For example, currently in my computer I have

1. Java (TM) 6 Update 5

2. Java (TM) 6 Update 3 and

3. Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Which one of these I can delete safely and still let java work on websites? Are all of the updates necessary?

If you are the end user, you can ignore or disable the update program from Control Panel->Java.

Java is usually pretty stable, unless the update is for major security fix and you use Java extensively. Have fun.

Its only important if you want to play java based games or programs. The java update will uninstall the old java

You can't "delete" the updates. The websites that use the latest Java version will *require* you to install the updates in order to continue.

You should be able to delete the second one, but I would back it up first and only delete that backup if everything is fine without the second one.

Or, you could simply delete them all and reinstall the latest version of java.

Depends. If you are using any website or program that needs the required update, then you need it. Otherwise no.
