Whats wrong with my computer?

Recently my computer has started slowing up at some points and i can hear something which sounds like the processor working really hard. This has only started happening in the last month and i've had this computer for 8 months. I have not overclocked anything. Does anyone know whats wrong with my computer?

    hi there

this happens to all pc,s after a while, and for several reasons

the main reason is would you beleive dirt and dust, and this accumilates on your cpu fan and heatsink over the months and makes it more difficult for the cpu to stay cool

however the good news is this is easily fixed, and depending on your cpu socket type this can be a quick or longer job

first thing you need is some "air duster"(compressed air in a aerosol can) and this can be bought from http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=25351...

using short bursts of air clean the cpu fan and then the heatsink, however if its possible to remove the cpu fan to gain access to the heatsink then do this, clean the heatsink making sure you get between the gaps in the heatsink

also if possible remove the heatsink(be careful not to remove the cpu by accident) and using a soft brush(a new paintbrush is a excellent idea),using the long bristles will get between the gaps easily

also clean all the other case fans and if theres a fan on your graphic card do the same to this as you have to your cpu/heatsink

however theres other hardware that can start to struggle and the most common is the hard drive, especially the older ide(pata) hard drives, after a while these can make quite alot of noise, this isnt bad but it can be annoying after a while, solution : upgrade to a sata drive, these are better drives and have a faster seek speed, and on the whole they are alot quieter.i have had 2 160gb sata drives in my pc for the last 18months and they are as quiet today as they were when i bought them

the power supply is another contender, and just like the cpu fan it can become dusty and clogged with dirt, however using the air duster you can clean the fans and the interior of the psu which should help it run better and quieten down

and if your knowledgable enough you can open up your psu and clean the parts bit by bit, theres a excellent guide at http://www.smps.us/computer-power-supply.html

a hard drive and registry defrag would also helps and even a complete windows reinstallation would also be a great idea

however if you wish to send me a picture of the inside of your p.c i could make a better diagnosis for you

    any problems let me know

    good luck mate !

I used to think it was the wireless modem I had. Because, there would be times when I wouldn't be able to do any thing online, and the shortcut on my desktop would say I have an Excellent Connection. Actually, what it meant was, I have a great connection to my wireless modem and the bars, in the Wireless Network Connection box, would be all full and green! The wireless monitor program would say "You are connect to the modem, but not associated with Internet" or something like that. It's happened to me so many times, I don't think you can avoid it. It always comes back. There's a good chance, it's not your computers. Go Figure!

This could be for a number of reasons, the 2 main reasons being:

    1. There's a virus in you're computer

    - One of the best programs to get rid of a virus is AVG Anti-Virus. It's also free, so you don't need to worry about paying for it.

    2. You have too many programs on you're computer

    - Say if you have, e.g. Several games installed on you're computer, like The Sims 2, it takes up alot of room of you're computer, which slows it down.

    - You should check the memory on you're computer. If most of it is taken up, that's most likely the reason for it being slow.

there could be several reasons for slow performance, like OS problem or free space on your harddisk.

As you said you can hear some sound, the only hardware that can make sound is the HDD, if balance of you HDD paltes is lost it starts makin gsoem sound, which can be heard very easily (its and randon sound increases and then decreasea nd stops). You may need to take a replacement foro your HDD, as your pc is just 8 months old you can claim for warranty for HDD.

Ur pc is performing slow due to this HDD problem.

Make sure you copy all your data before u take HDD for replacement as you may get a new blank HDD as replacement.

well it depends on what your using the computer for. Maybe you may be running a program which makes the computer run faster than normal therefore making it slow. Ok if you have an Intel Centrino Duo processor, you can download a graphics upgrade. That should make your computer run faster and easier not using as much energy.

The processor doesn't make a noise. It is the hard drive that makes the noises. Maybe try a registry cleaner. http://www.download.com/Wise-Registry-Cleaner-3-Fr...

    clean up your hard drive

    defragment your hard drive

    programs►accessories►system tools►disk defragmentor

    install free antivirus

    http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Editio...

also dellete your cookies, clear history and temperary files in internet explorer

And if your hard drive is almost full maybe get rid of some stuff. Your operating system needs space to run. Maybe free up 5-10G of free space.

also look in your start up menu and delete everything that is in there

It is either that you don't have enough memory (add more) and you are hearing the hard drive swapping files on and off or the paging file itself is too small and isn't working properly - then set it to system managed size.

Processors are silent. It's the fan responding to extra heat. First, check if any of your case fans are blocked. Next, open your case and check if you have a fan cooler inside. Unblock it. Then do a scan for viruses using Spybot. http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000...

One, it's not the processor it's electronic and silent expecpt for the cooling fan . most likely it's the hard drive and you may have a virus or two lurking in there. Do a system clean up and defrag make sure you have virus protection and it's currant...

1 Run CHKDSK, it restores missing files.

    or

2 enter "sfc /scannow" into the run commands, have your OS CD ready on the standbye to be scanned. That'll replace any missing or corrupt system files, keep clicking 'Retry' if your prompt untill the scan is complete..it works a treat.
