What qualities do you look for in a cashier/retail representative?

For example, for a cashier, would you rather have him/her put as much as items in a bag as possible? And for a retail rep, would you rather have the workers proactively ask you for help, or would you rather shop and look around unbothered unless you needed help?

Update:

Also, answer from the perspective of an everyday customer.

I like cashiers who are friendly but know how to move the merchandise into the bag, & not chit chat with others as they hold up the line. As to stuffing the bags, let's not make it so heavy, the bag will burst or can't be lifted > common sense should guide you here.

As to the retail sales people, it depends on how high end the store is. If it's just general merchandise, or anything you can pick off the shelf yourself, then leave me alone.

If it's paint, shoes, autos, expensive jewelery, then by all means, have someone hustle over to me & seek out how they can be of utmost service to me.

From the point of view of a customer I don't care.

As a person hireing I would say someone who's polite with a nice smile. The better looking the better.
