what is the exact date of the start of the Holy Month of Ramadan this year?

the exact day is unknown, because we can not count on calculation.

ramadan will begin monday or tuesday ( 1st or 2nd of september )

we have to see the crest (moon) on the 31st of august (today).

if no trust worthy muslim sees the moon we continue the month of shaban ( to the month b4 ramadan) to 30 days raver then 29 days.

The exact date of the start of Ramadan we in Indonesia are awaiting the government pronouncement about it which is usually made on the last day before we should start it.But according to Muhammadiyah the biggest islamic organization,the ramadan will be started on Monday September 1,2008.

No one knows officially yet. Probably we will have the correct answer tonight if not tomorrow night. Probably the 1st september could be 2nd or 31st August, we just have to wait and see.
