Study Abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica?
I am planning on studying and volunteering abroad in Heredia, Costa Rica but I am concerned about the weather. How humid is it? Do you get drenched in sweat as soon as you go out or is it just a mild humidity? I studied abroad in Ecuador last summer and it had a cool temperature and had no humidity so I have been a little spoiled in terms of my expectations.
Also, does anyone know what the atmosphere and culture is like there? Is Heredia a good choice as opposed to San Jose, Alajuela, or other cities?
I will be going in the spring semester, from January to April. I found the program through AmeriSpan, which is the best yet cheapest agency. It ranks the Spanish language program quality, homestay comforts/interaction, and the school's participation in sponsoring activities for each city in each country. That is how I found the National University in Heredia, Costa Rica (the town). It is a few blocks from the central plaza, the school hosts a ton of activities, and it seems great. The only thing is the city does not have as many volunteer opportunities available as I would have liked.

You chose the best time to come to Costa Rica. It's the dry season! You can expect lots of sun with little humidity unless you venture to the Caribbean or rain forest regions.
For any other Costa Rica information, try the TicosLand directory.

Heredia is a province as well as a town. When are you going? Heredia the town is right between Alajuela and San Jose so climate wise you will not see a different. Where exactly will you be and with whom will you be studying? Temperatures will depend on the time of year and the exact elevation of your volunteer site. Heredia can be humid but it is not particularly hot. Temperatures higher than 80degrees F or 27 degrees C are not that common.

Been living here for three years. Heredia is a nice choice..stay away from San Jose, lots of crime. The rest of the country is fairly safe.
You are coming during the best time...Jan til April is the driest of the whole year, very little rain on the North Pacific but a little rain in Heredia.
You are a 5 dollar bus ride to the Pacific coast, so you can get out for the weekends.
Enjoy..Costa Ricans are very friendly!

I just studied there for am month and a half this summer. I also used Amerispan. I do prefer it to San jose and there is plenty to do and once you figure out the bus system you can pretty much go anywhere in the country from there. At first it was a bit hectic and crazy but if you can meet people and adjust well you will have the time of your life!
