If you can't reason with your neighbour you have no choice other than to involve the authorities in your area. It is not the dogs fault just another irresponsible owner that gives us all a bad name. As much as I love dogs it would drive me nuts if my neighbour let his dog behave in this way.

Dogs should compliment our lives not disrupt them!

What we did once, to check on ours, was set up our tape recorder to see what was going on. Long spells of absolute quiet, then some nails on boards moving about (we had a rug on hardwood floors) and some play growling, and then more silence. It was so interesting!! I suggest you do similar. We had an occasion when we went next door for an evening. Halfway through the evening I was horrified to hear a very strange noise coming from our place - we were end of terrace at the time. I said what on earth is that - they coughed, and said that's your dog!! He was a Basset, and was having such a lonely howl. Not hugely noisy, but just a very sad soulful noise. But in your case, try the tape recorder - despite going out and standing outside, they may just be clever enough to realise what you are up to!!? Do you leave a radio on low when you go out? It could be that sometimes something happens outside that starts them off, not always, just occasionally and if you have a radio on, outside noises might not disturb them in quite the same way as being in a silent house might? Did, in this instance, you go out for the evening when you are normally at home? In other words, did you change your routine which might have upset them? I think the only thing you can do, once you've established exactly what's going on, which might take several days, is to apologise to your neighbours, and let them know you are doing everything possible to sort out the situation. Hard to say they are making this up, and it might have been the last straw in a 'bad hair day' that caused them to speak to you ... and people do exaggerate facts too. But be aware that Local Council do have powers to stop noise, provided it's proven, whether or not you own your house, or are renting. Keep the lines of communication open with these neighbours!

I absolutely agree with steve b...You can't contol the dog's behaviour, The neighbors are responsible for that and aren't doing their job. - They need to be made aware by authority (an anonymous call to the police by you?).

I have a "new" puppy, also, and when I can't be home to discipline him, we cage him in his crate inside. It keeps HIM safe, our property safe, him quiet (no outside distractions to cause excessive barking), and he won't pee in his "quarters". - It's a win-win situation. :)...That is the best solution, IMO, for owners that can't be present all the time.

But, I think having an officer of the law tellng the neighbors their "options", will cause them to HAVE to be compliant, or lose the dog. - Hopefully, problem solved.

If you want to buy an outdoor bark deterrent, I guess it depends on how much you are willing to spend:

Or, maybe you can convince your neighbors to use an anti-bark collar. Also, you can give them some info on how to get their puppy from barking while they are away. Here is a website that helps you to get your neighbors to control their dog's barking:

    Hope all this helps!

    hi,

Just as human language is multifaceted and multipurpose, barking allows a dog to communicate many different messages in a variety of situations. It can signal a request to an owner ("Hey, I want to go outside!"), impart a warning ("You're in my territory!"), or simply serve to amuse when a dog has little else to do.

    here's a treatment:
