How can I get my ShihTzu puppy to keep the elastic hair tie in her hair??
My shih tzu puppy is almost 5 months old. Her hair is getting pretty long, and I like it longer then having a shaved shih tzu!! (i really dont like the looks of a shaved dog)
Well anyway, I put a little bit of hair on the top of her head up in a little elastic hair tie so she can at least get used to it for whenever her bangs get too long and fall in her face.
But every single time i put one in, within 20 minutes its out again, she'll shake, and itch at it until it falls out! She doesnt seem to mind it at all when I put it in, she will just sit there like its routine...
So im just looking for a few tips on how to make it either feel better for her, or a few tips on how to keep it in!
Please help!! =]

You don't have to cut the topknot hair off, she will get used to it eventually.
I have a 6 month old Shih Tzu and at first he didn't like it and would rub his head against the carpet. He now, for the most part, will keep his topknot in. Only recently have I started putting just one band in and even now I sometimes use two. I tie up the shorter hair - that comes from the stop - first and then gather more hair from behind and then tie both together. This makes it harder for the puppy to take out and gets all the bits in that may fall out naturally throughout the day.
Always make sure you've not got any eyelashes in the topknot and that it's not pulling back the eyes, i always press the topknot up and down once I've done it to make sure it's comfortable.

I am good with dogs so I hope this is help-full. Try tying it around twice or as long as it is tight and if that doesn't hold then put 2 rubber bands on. That should do the trick. But if you are looking for something like on this following picture:

Either you can do it just by tying it up or you can tye their hair and then split it in two, like you would be making pigtails after it is tied. Then you rap the same band around one side and then the same band around the other side. Do so until it is tight. I hope this works:)

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aUAuh
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Praise and lots of it!
As she doesn't mind you putting her bangs up (it's like routine...) afterward, praise her and make a big deal of how she is such a pretty girl. When she starts shaking it out and scratching to take it out, tell her no. If she stops, if even for a moment, again tell her what a good girl she is and make a big deal out of her bow by touching it and praising her. If she leaves it in a little longer add a little treat to the praise.
Shih Tzu's are smart little devils and before long I'll bet she's begging you to put her bow on.
Good luck!

Usually hair ties but I too have heard people call it scrunchies, hair elastics, hair bands, ponytail holders, etc.

She doesn't like it. It probably feels weird to her..she knows something is up there. Most animals don't care to have stuff "stuck" to them. =) How about instead of doing that, just trimming her hair...not shaving, but you know, somewhere in the middle. =)
