now that upshaw is dead do you think the NFL will finally give the former players better pension?
gene upshaw blocked attempts to give retirees more money,now that he is dead will players union correct past wrongs?
i was refering to players of the past,players that paid their union dues,established the league and made it into what it is today,gene upshaw as union president went out of his way to keep former players from getting increases in their pensions and getting decent medical benefits as far as recieving a pension,players need 4 years to collect a pension and average career is 3 years.The NFL is the most profitable league in america,and the former players have the worst pensions of the major professional sports

as usual theyll probably get put on the back burner since they dont think its that important theyd much rather sign more endoursements and advertisements freakin bullshit.great players r suffering puttin there body on the lines and get nothing now that there old and finishd a shame indeed

So how much of a pension do you think they need?
The average career in the NFL is 3 years, and even at league minimum they are making well over $500,000 a year.
But, for argument's sake, lets say they play 10 years in the league, and make 1 million dollars a year.
That means that by the time they are 35 years old, they have made over 10 million dollars over their careers. That's more than you and I will ever make in our lifetimes.
Now if they are broke at the end of their career, is that the NFL's fault?
These players spend their money as fast as they get it on lavish lifestyles and expensive toys and when football is over, they have nothing left. If they would be responsible and put their money away during their playing days, they would be set financially for the rest of their lives when their careers are over.
They are not exactly old when they are done playing. They have another 30 + years left to be in the working world.
So, I guess they are part of a select group, and they may deserves some kind of pension after they are done playing, but the NFL should not have to support them the rest of their lives for their poor decisions they made while they were playing.

Gene Upshaw couldn't "give" former players money he was NOT the NFL he was the players rep. there is alot of uneducated people running around bashing unions & it sickens me.
the NFL is the company, Gene Upshaw was the union president, all he can do is ask. if the company doesn't want to give it, then all he can do is ask again or in a different manner.
the thought that people think unions have their hands in the profits is absurd. the unions get dues from the players, that money is to pay union officials, lawsuits etc.
