Can a router be used with a cable modem and no PC?
There is no electricity where my desktop PC is usually hooked up. In the interim, can I run the cable modem to a separate outlet with a router? If so, how would I go about doing this? The outlet and coaxial cable is downstairs and I want to use the router upstairs with a laptop.

The modem, router and PC have to be plugged into power. Where they're plugged in makes no difference.
The router has to be connected to the modem with ethernet cable - no more than 100 meters (328 feet). If the computer is connected to the router with cable the 328 foot rule applies to that cable also.
Those are the only constraints.
