I want to start selling my crafts at craft shows.........?

I recently realized I need to stop dreaming and start acting on my crafting skills! So I want to start selling stuff at craft shows/fairs. All the shows I have gone to never have any pet products so I was thinking of doing cat stuff (pillows, food dishes, treat jars, etc). I've looked up various info online, but wanted to hear other peoples info/input on this.....whats the best way to get started? Make a bunch of stuff then line up the shows? Would cat stuff be a good idea?

Cat stuff is a good idea if it's not something they could make for themselves or that they could find cheaper at Big Lots. First, make sure your stuff is time-tested. Use it yourself for at least a year, or give some away and check back with them in a year.

You need a seller's license from your state. It's free and not hard to get, but it is time-consuming. You could probably apply now and have it in time for the December shows.

Watch your newspaper for "crafters wanted" notices. Expect to pay $10.00 to $20.00 per day for a table. If you're ambitious, you could go to your local newspaper website and search for shows that were held last year. You can call the people and ask them if they will be having their show again this year.

Have at least a hundred items made and ready at the same time that you are looking for a show. You won't sell that much, but customers like a well-stocked booth.

You might want to check out the info on a couple of pages at my site:

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/shows.htm

    http://glassattic.com/polymer/business.htm

Those pages are mostly about doing polymer clay as a business, but most would apply just as well to doing any craft as a business.

Cat stuff may well be fine depending on the show, but you might also consider making things for people with cat themes (jewelry, bowls, frames, etc.).

    HTH, and good luck!
