The name blackeyed susan for Thunbergia alata was first published in Bailey, Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture, 3, 1930, 3338.
It got the name in cause of its open-faced yellow to orange flowers with dark centers. The reason for "Susan" and not "Mary" or "Katie" is unknown; might be the botanists wives or daughters name was Susan and she had black eyes.
