Can someone please give me basic information on craters please?

Craters are basically holes in a volcano mountain top or at ground level formed either by volcanic activity or by meteorites.
Our athmosfere protects the Earth from small meteorites but, for instance, the Moon is full of huge and tiny craters because it has no athmosfere.
