It's not an animal, it's a riddle from Greek mythology. The answer is a man. When he is a child, he crawls on all fours. when he is a man he walks on two feet. And when he is an old man he needs a cane. Thereby needing three legs.

    Four: Baby

    Two: Man/Woman

Three: Old Man on a cane/Old Woman on a cane

    A human.

The human starts out as a baby crawling.

Then the baby begins to walk upright.

Then when the baby grows up and into an old person, he/she uses a cane.
