are there any artist who only paint in black and white?

Gerhard Richter made a lot of paintings in black and white, although didnt work solely in monochrome.Check out his series of animals, baader-meinhof, alpine and curtains, amongst others, on the link below.

Robert Ryman was known for a period of monochrome works (just google) as were Kazemir Malevich and Ad Reinhardt, and theres actually a wikipedia page on monochrome painting that will give you more names.

Many artists use colour at some time in their work, but just as many go through periods of monochrome also, just google image search any of the names from the links below and you should have a wealth of images to see. :-)

Franz Kline has a lot of abstract black and white paintings.

Chuck Close started out doing huge black and white portraits but later did color.

Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso, Michelangelo

It's hard to find artists who ONLY paint in black and white as like all people they go through phases.
