My PC won't let me play computer games. It always Errors. How can I fix this?

Question

I know it's an old game, but I recently found it whilst sorting through old boxes. So I downloaded it on my computer, and the installation went smoothly, but whenever I click "play" it sends me this message: 

Microsoft Zoo Tycoon 2 has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience

And it lets me send an error report, which I've done. Twice.
Though I don't see how it helps.

Any idea on how to fix this problem?
It seems like almost any game I try to play.
(Like The Sims 2) on this computer, always does this.

The funny thing is, they used to work perfectly fine on this PC.
The only game I can play on my computer it seems, is WoW.

And I don't know why.

Is their a way to fix this problem?
Am I maybe missing a programme
or file that I need to play these games?

I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER, so don't suggest it. And I don't have the money for a new game. It's not the game that's the problem, because it does this with all games.

Why should you buy a new computer?
some old game was not designed for Windows XP, even Windows Vista and you can click right in the .exe file and put the compatibitily mode to Windows 98

If still not working usually I typed in google : "<name of the game>" Windows XP patch or error in blablabla... (write all the error description shown)

How about you reinstall it and if that doesn't work then its proably hardware problem graphics card or somthing but since it plays WoW then it should play sims 2 like nothing
