What's the big deal about Cole Hamels?

He's no better than a #2 or #3 pitcher on a good staff. They only call him a #1 because Philly's rotation isn't. I don't get why people think he's an ace.

He is a number one starter because just look at his 3.12 ERA. He's on pace to another 200 strikeout season. His WHIP is great at 1.06. He's currently 7th in ERA, 1st in WHIP and 3rd in Strikeout. Trust me, he is as good as his numbers show.

He's still young, he never really truly sprouted until last season, so he has time to develop even more which is scary.

And Im an A's fan. Just to let you know. Go Oakland!

Maybe because last year he was 15-5 with a 3.39 ERA and 177 k's in 183 innings and so far this year he is 12-9 (no run support) with a 3.12 ERA and a WHIP of 1.06 and has 180 k's in 208 IP. He is only 24 remember and he is a left handed pitcher with a great change up and decent fastball with command of both. That's why he would be the ace of a lot of teams staffs not just the Phillie's. And by the way I'm not a Phillies fan at all, far from actually.

Samdugan - HAHAHAHA. Wow, have you ever seen this guy pitch? he's got a better era than every Mets pitcher except Santana. You call a 24 year old, who's second only in what-would-be the Mets staff, to a 29 year old with 8 years experience - considered one of the best in the league, a 5 man starter? You should be WISHING he was your 2nd starter! Not Martinez, with such a remarkable era of 5.44, Pelfrey at 3.62, Perez at 3.86 OR Maine at 4.18. I really think you need to check your facts before you try to trash talk someone with absolute crap for facts.

Hamels has the best era for a starting pitcher on the Phils. He has more complete games as well as shutouts than the rest of the team combined...and onto NL stats...

He's 3rd, only behind first by .002, in lowest opponent average, he's second for innings pitched, 3rd for WHIP, 6th in strikeouts, has a remarkable average of 14 pitches per inning, he has the best OBA in the league, has, remarkably, only hit 1 batter this year, and still has less runs allowed than such pitchers as Brandon Webb.

You call that a 2nd or 3rd pitcher? Maybe if he were with veterans or a pitcher like Sheets, Santana, Sabathia, but NEWSFLASH - Not every team has pitchers like that. Hamels is in his second full year, you think those are bad stats? i think not. He's gonna be a force to be reckoned with (more than he is now) when he has this year under his belt.

Is it too much to ask to try to get people to justify something they say when they are trash talking another team or player? At least try to back yourself up, rather than just flaunt your ignorance

Knowing that you are a Mets fan you may think he isn't a good #1 starter but he is he has above 90 mph fastball good command of his changeup and is a competitor he gives it his all.

You can't compare him to Johan Santana because the experience and better stuff by Santana but Cole Hamels will be a good starting pitcher in the future once he gets more experience.

becuase HE IS A GOOD PITCHER.....just because he doesnt pitch as good as santana...who is like the best in baseball...doesnt mean he cant be an ace. give the guy some credit...he still has 12 wins and has pitched numerous shut outs this year....just look at statistics...and without him...the phillies would not be where they are....just like you guys and santana!
