The freedom trail is kinda nonexistent at night (there is a red line along the road but the sites are all closed and it is too dark to read the historical signs and markers (small print.) If you are looking for shopping and tourist stuff it will be too late out. But a walk up Commonwealth Ave. from Fenway Park is sort of picturesque; (Follow Brookline Ave towards the Citgo Sign and crisscross Kenmore Square.) About 25 minutes walk up this very safe route (past about 25 statues and stuff) you will reach the bottom of the Public Gardens, very lovely horticulture and statues all year round, and reasonably safe. go through to the Boston Commons and you can't miss public transport, cabs etc. All told about an hours walk if you meander. Well lit and colorful, with glimpses of the Charles River to the left and of the uptown skyline to the right.

For clubs/bars stick with Kenmore Square or Landsdowne St (Right behind the Green Monster. Lots of interesting places around Fenway.

If you want the Freedom Trail and Fanuel Hall go in the morning/afternoon before the game.

Downtown Boston is a pretty small area, and a few places are not too safe late at night. Stay out of the Financial District, and stay away from Washington Street. The area right around Park Street Station is iffy, between the drunks and the homeless people. The Public Garden and the Boston Common are very dark, but there should be people around until the bars close (many close at 1:00). The Old State House and The New State House should both be lit up pretty well.

The T stops running around 12:30, so watch that.

However -- Copley Square (Back Bay) is beautiful at night. Many people will be wandering the Back Bay until quite late. Walk down Comm Ave to Dartmouth, then cut over to Boylston to get to Copley Square.

The Christian Science Mother Church and Symphony Hall are also picturesque at night.

Stick around the Fenway area after the game and party with all the crazy Red Sox fans! Yes, you will be safe, just stick by the crowds and don't wander off by yourself. If you want to go to some bars, go to Fanueil Hall. There's not really much to see at 10 at night. Fanueil Hall is a historic area, but mostly just bars at that time.

When I was there it seemed the same safety wise both day and night. I did go with friends who live there year round. It was a lot like NY City just slightly cleaner. A lot of statues, and parks. There are some begging bums again like New york.
