Laptop shutting down when it gets hot?

I have an Acer laptop that I just had "downgraded" from Vista back to XP. Since then, my laptop has been shutting down periodically. I've noticed that the fan doesn't come on like it did before. Also, when I restart the laptop, the fan comes on until it cools down and then shuts back off. What can I do, myself or would I be better off taking it to someone.

Update:

I use the laptop on a portable lap desk that I picked up from Wal-Mart. The laptop is only about 3 weeks old. I don't think I can access the waranty since I modified the Operating System by putting XP on instead of Vista.

ok I'm not so sure how competent you are with more advanced computing but if you know how go into bios and you can change the settings of your fans and cooling. if you don't know how to do this just take it to the computer store. also i don't think your warranty would of been void as operating systems have no effect on the hardware of your computer in respect to fans working, this is all controlled through bios.

When that happen to mine is I took it to this place where they fix computers and laptops and they told me that the reason why it is doing that is because there is lot's of dust in your fan and probably is damage and should get a new one they don't cost that much. You can take it to a place where they would put it on for you or buy one at best buy or walmart. Also you must buy this product called CanAir is kinda like a spray where it takes all the dust off. Usually it is good to do it at least once a month. I hoped I helped and good luck

Not sure if it will work for you but my laptop (which is actually a Dell) would get really hot and function slowly - I bought a 'laptop cooling fan'. You can get any kind, they have different styles, brands, types, etc. at different prices. It's like an extra fan that keeps your laptop cool. That might help!

That's the one I have. I like it. You can make it so it fits nicely on your lap or stands up nicely on a surface. It plugs into your laptop so it doesn't need batteries. Lightweight too. It only cost about $25.

use one of those ozone safe air compressed things and blow into the holes of the computer where the fan is. Or if your omre professional use a screwdriver and take the cover out and clean the fan carefully with a soft towel. and also do not put your computer anywhere that has lint floating around [ie sofa, bed, couch]

Source(s): i have a macbook air that sometimes does that

You need to put the program that originally came with the lab top and also you might need to replace the fan and possibly add more memory to it. After that, you can also take it to the shop and get it scanned to make sure everything is running accurately.

Do you leave your laptop on your bed or any kind of not flat surface?

Your laptop needs to be on a table or desk or some sort flat surface like that or else it will overheat and destroy the motherboard

Dont put it on your lap, or anything fabric

    (bed, carpets, clothes ect)

Get like, a breadboard and put it under it

thats what I do, and I think it really prefents shutting down from heat.

if it still does it, you might need a new batterie, which could get real expensive.

    Gooodluck!

Take it to Acer Service Center and ask them about it and Claim the Warranty.
