Should the Queen as head of the church of England call a national day of prayer for those fighting in ....?

Afghanistan. Like her father and churchill did in the second world war?

Update:

Calling together all those who are church of England christians in her realm

Update 2:

Happy penguin - one does not exclude the other, there can be both

Update 3:

Jon - it did not stop ww2 but they prayed for ideal weather on the dday landings and it happened.

Update 4:

Jake - it doesn't matter whether they follow that faith or not. The Queen is head of the church of England, that is her role. We are too crazy about "offending" others. If the head of the hindus called for a day of prayer it would not be offensive to the c of e soldiers so why would this be.

Update 5:

Miss dee - it would not be forcing anyone it would be a request from the queen. If you are a practising Christian and the Queen is head of your church I'm sure you would be pleased with this. The others who are not in the church will carry on as normal. How can anyone be offended by this

Update 6:

And also Miss dee the complaints will not be from the muslims, jews, hindus etc - they will be from the politically correct who hate Britain and everything it stands for

You know, I'm not even sure if the Queen believes. I think it's more of a necessity that comes with the position. I hope she does, but then again, I can only see more outrage in the UK if she does this. We will get complaints from the Muslims and Jewish, and the many other religious sects in the UK, I know that we are a Christian nation, and I am all for promoting Christianity, even though I believe that really, in a nation that should be predominantly Christian anyway, I feel that it's quite disgusting that many don't believe.

I think the best thing, would be for all of us who do actually believe, to pray. There's no need to broadcast it and force others to do the same.

EDIT: Ok, maybe this sounded a bit harsh. I was only saying what I thought may happen.

I do think that it is a good idea, as I said, but I can see many people complaining about it (I didn't specify just Muslims)

Also, as I said, the Queen is just another person, the same as me and you. Although I do hope that she does call a national day of prayer, I don't think she will, as you have said, everyone is too afraid to offend anyone.

Because she is just the same as everyone else in the eyes of the Lord, I am just saying, why do we need her to tell us to pray? Why don't we do it anyway?

    Also, I'm not CofE. I'm Baptist :)

Not all soldiers are christians. The C of E is forced upon the armed services, but that doesn't mean the individual soldiers follow that faith.

It would be a piece of tokenism, that might make a few people at home feel better, but do nothing for anyone in the front line. Only a civilian would even think of it.

So your question was a ruse to enable you to have a bigoted rant then? Too scared to be honest?

Wait... does she read the Bible? Maybe she won't!

    Judges 1:19 - New Int'l Version

THE LORD WAS WITH THE MEN OF JUDAH. They took possession of the hill country, but they* (*God and the Jews) were UNABLE to drive the people from the plains, BECAUSE THEY HAD IRON CHARIOTS* (*we don’t really know how many Jews were killed in battle!)

The Iron chariot was a new technology to the Bible God and he was not prepared for it so GOD AND THE JEWS HAD TO RUN FOR COVER IN TOTAL CHAOS! This is not surprising because in the case of Sodom of Gomorrah and of the Tower of Babel the Bible God had to personally come down from Heaven to Earth to find out what is that mankind was doing…

Jesus Christ was teaching “War Strategy 101” to his disciples along the same lines… “If the enemy is bigger and stronger than you are, you better surrender!” (Luke 14:31). Also Jesus was teaching everybody to give FIRST to Caesar God what belongs to Caesar God and SECONDLY to God what belongs to God! Jesus was never confrontational with the Roman authorities and that is how he survived for so long… Saint Paul warned the Christians that “Not in vain the Roman authorities carry a sword! They are God’s servants!” So don’t pray God to help beat the enemy… You can’t count on God to help you all the time! He just can’t!

Psalm 137:8-9 - O Daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is he who repays you for what you have done to us- he who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.

The Bible teaches that the enemies of God ought to be killed in their infancy when it is easier to get rid of them before they develop WMD or something worse than that… Christians call it “preemptive strike” so they won’t have to worry about “iron chariots” or greater enemy forces…!

While I am sure prayer is all nice and warm and fuzzy, I think that maybe something practical should be done to help soldiers and their families - something real and productive which will help them..

Whilst I applaud a difficult job they do so well,I like most people in the UK don't bother with religion, so why would it do any good or help the troops in any way.

  • 1 decade ago

Why bother? Prayer hasn't solved anything so far.

Well, she could. It certainly didn't hurt. But it did not stop WWII and it wouldn't stop this conflict.
