The LHC turned on a couple days ago, did we die?

Who do you mean "we" because you're alive, I'm alive...?

If we were dead, we wouldn't be able to type on the computer. The LHC did not and will not cause people to die.

    End.

Yes, when the LHC did its first tests firing a proton beam around the collider we all died.

And we'll all die again when it collides 2 particle beams in October (at 3/4 power), then again when it is at full power next year.

Then of course we will all die again on 12/21/2012.

But of course, we all died on 12/31/1999 from Y2K, then again in May 2003 when that unknown planet predicted by a Japanese cult collided with Earth (you remember that, not a good day).

Maybe we did, but we will not know until they actually turn to full power (which is still weeks away).

Mind you, the best they will achieve is a 'puny' 7 TeV (a tera-electron-volt is a unit of energy in particle physics -- 7 TeV is around a millionth of a Joule).

Every second, thousands of particles with energies above 100 TeV hit atoms in our atmosphere. Every day, we get hit by particles with energies of 100,000,000 TeV.

The only difference with the LHC is that we will have a detector right at the collision spot to analyze what happens.

9/10/08 was phase one. They have started the proton beams in opposite directions and they will precision "thread" them for the actual high energy collision to take place in a few weeks. So you won't die until right before Halloween

That SOB LHC, I tell you,

Hang on, ... hang on, ... wait a minute. We interrupt this answer with a very important announcement.

An 8-track tape just came in, glued to our hyperspace carrier pigeon...

    .

    {... skip,...skip, ... glub, ... brrfff .... click...}

    .

.... so, we say, "Go for it, find that Higgs, poke a hole in the fabric of space-time and invite E.T. from the 11th dimension to lunch."

This message brought to you by a consortium of entities from the 8th, 9th, and 10th dimensions. Those 11th dimension guys are weird. You can have them.

Bye now. Have a nice day, and thanks for all the fish.

    [end transmission]

Well, there you have it. Proof positive.

Not yet lol. Maybe we are both dead and alive at the same time.

Nothing ventured...nothing gained. To hick or not to hick? Will it won't it? Will be interesting either way.

I think it is quite possible that you did and you just haven't laid down yet?

The second you read this, it could happen as you realise you are supposed to be....well... dead!
