looking for linux/unix operating system?

I don't have an idea about unix, linux. in my present semester have unix operating system (work in black screen with comands) but i could not found through internet. i have found only graphic versions. Yes i would like to know why its free and its histrory also.

    1) You can open a terminal window in the graphical version. That will let you work with the command line.

    2) Its free because the person who made the Linux kernel released it under GNU GPL License. For history go to

    Load Ubuntu Server on your system. Otherwise, you can just install Ubuntu Desktop and hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 to exit the graphical environment. Or you can install Debian from source.

    linux is freeware u can simply download it and use
