I have a 4 months old 1/2 boxer & 1/2 black lab...?

I have been trying to walk him on the leash. Well, he basically walks me! How in the heck do I stop this? Please help.

Whenever he pulls, stop in your tracks. If he continues to pull start walking in the other direction. As soon as you feel slack in the leash praise the dog LOTS. Let him associate a loose leash with lots of goods things such as praises and treats.

I have a boxer and they are such easily excited dogs. I used the tips that Cesar Milan gave. I place his collar right at the tip of his neck like they do in dog shows. Check out a dog whisperer show or the website. When we adopted my dog he would jump, pull and bite the leash. Now he walks right next to me. I've even started jogging with him.Don't be fooled though. It takes a lot of hard work and a ton of patience. This is not something that will be done with one walk. Just keep at it and remember that positive praise always works. Having a well behaved dog is the best gift ever! Good luck.

Don't give it too much slack in the leash. Don't hold it so tight you are choking it but just enough that it cannot get out in front of you. When you start to walk, if it gets out in front of you, just stop and give a slight tug on the leash. Make it sit. Start walking again. Eventually it will understand what it is you want it to do. It is all about getting the animal to understand what you want. Be careful about giving praise while doing this. It will get the animal excited and cause them to start pulling again. Then you will have to correct them and that is confusing to them. Wait until you are done with the walk to praise.

  • You need to put some effort into it! You're gunna look silly!

Alright -when you are walking along, and he starts to pull you, stop. Change direction, walk the other way. When he starts pulling again, stop and walk the other way again. This way, he learns that he doesn't get anywhere by behaving unruly and pulling. Sometimes, you can get away with just halting, and waiting for the dog to stop pulling and turn and look at you. When he does, reward him and give him a treat.

Carry treats on you... when he is NOT pulling on the leash, randomly tell him how good he is, and give him treats.

Source(s): This, with corrective yanks and pulls intermixed, is pretty much how I taught all my dogs the same.

Go to peteducation.com and look up dog training: collars and leads....it gives great advice regarding how to get your pup used to lead walking as well as discussing the types of collars you can use...very informative and worth looking into...I never paid much attention to training my dogs when I had them, and rue the day....One ran away into traffic and was killed, one ran away and almost got run over, but survived...but was unmanageable out of the house....one eventually got the message, but only because we lived far away from traffic, and in the woods where she could roam free; but I see now how important it is to have a dog that obeys commands...and walks well on the leash: my daughter has a pit bull that is a love, and actually did well on the leash from the start and it is so much better....take the time to train your puppy correctly..it will be good for both of you. Good luck.
