Is it normal to still be in pain a week after tooth extraction?
I had my farback molar taken out a week ago and for the first couple of days i experienced pain and a horrible taste and odour in my mouth. The taste and odour have pretty much gone but i still experience pain, sometimes worst than others.
Also the hole is really deep and alot of food tends to get stuck down there, i'm wondering if it is a little too deep!?
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks xxxxxxxx

Those back molar tooth extractions feel funny don't they? Gum tissue takes about 3-4 weeks to heal and the bone may take, up to 8 months. It is important that you take very good care of this area. That means try not to tongue it to death and do not put your fingers in there. Be sure to swish lightly with water to remove any debris out of the wound. It is possible that your tooth pain may be related to your pain threshold. There are surrounding nerves in there that have been affected by the extraction. Typically this pain doesn't happen for longer than a week. I would say that if you have no foul odor, it's not bleeding still, the swelling is going down and there is no persistent and/or severe pain nor fever, that you are healing well and should not be concerned about infection. Hope this helps and take care!

Contact your dentist and get them to have a look. In the mean time use salt and warm water and rinse thoroughly. You need to do this after every meal to clean out the socket. If the socket is infected, your dentist might prescribe a course of antibiotics.
Good luck.

Go back to denit sounds as though you have an infection in the socket, or a condition called dry socket. i had this when i had my wisdom teeth removed and i left it for a fortnight and ended up really unwell. your dentist will clean out the hole and pack it with some antibiotic stuff that helps to fight the infection, and also stops anymore food getting trapped in it.
