I was reading about the TV show, Charmed, the knot on the book, Can someone tell me about the Celtic religion?
I was finding it curious about the fact that someone mentioned that the knot on the book came from a religion that was older than Christianity. Could someone elaborate more on that? I like the TV series of Charmed, and just assumed that it was a book of spells, and that the symbol only was part of the Wicca religion. I was raised Christian, i know that is strange for me to watch something that i was strongly urged to not watch at all. Curiousity always killed the cat, or so to speak. i like the actors mainly.

The symbol is known as a 'triquetra' that is derived from ancient Celtic knotwork & adopted by Christians around St. Patrick's time as a symbol of the Trinity(Father, Son, & Holy Spirit). The interweaving lines represent One being in Three seperate, but equal parts.
But there's one problem with representing the Trinity, or the Godhead with symbols — it's CLEARY FORBIDDEN in the Bible! To represent the Trinity or God as a "symbol" or "image", etc. is strictly forbidden. All throughout the Old Testament the use of graven images are strictly forbidden! The very FIRST of the ten commandments forbids such symbolism!

The symbol is called a triqeutra. While three pointed knots were used in pagan times (Although I'm not familair with any having a specific religious context), the symbol as depicted in Charmed is a form used for many hundreds of years by Christians representing the trinity! Modern neopagans such as Wiccans essentially borrowed it from Christians (usually under the mistaken impression of ancient meanings). Wiccans commonly use it to represent past present and future or the concept of the triple goddess, but I think it is unfair to call it part of the Wiccan religion. It's simply a symbol to which Wiccans have attached meaning.
Celtic religion is a complete subject needing at least a book, not a paragraph on Y!A. A lot of details are also lost to us because the Celts didn't write down their religious beliefs. Also, the Celts were never a unified culture. They were several distinct cultures, each with its own beliefs and practices.

Wicca is a modern religion. And Charmed completely misrepresents it. Don't take a thing on that show as accurate.

Charmed was loosely based on Wicca, which in turn is caeltic in nature. however when you say Celtic religion its usually means Druidism/ Druidry. Her's the best link on Druidism:

BTW: I liked the show as well.
