When you're in a room full of people, and someone asks the group at large where the bathroom is, would you tell them, or just withhold the information because you don't see what benefit you would reap by giving them the answer they need?

Same basic idea. We answer because they need to know, and we have the information they seek. Plus, it's a nice courtesy. Yes, some people spend a lot of time answering question here, time that you may consider to be spent more wisely elsewhere; but you can't deny that it feels good to help others, and this is often the quickest, easiest, and most efficient way of doing that.

I can't speak for anyone else but I do because I like helping people. I get pleasure in knowing that I have helped someone. Some people do it I think because they are bored and this gives them fulfillment.
