Why do songs added from a CD to iTunes have a different genre than ones purchased from iTunes.?

An In Flames CD that I added to my iTunes registered the songs in the genre "Metal" but the same songs from the same CD in the iTunes Store are under the genre "Rock".

Jerro, there is no right answer for this. A song could be heard by 100 people and maybe most will agree but there gonna be at least 5 or 6 different genres among all, it depends on what each people understands for a specific one. Same thing happen among record labels, it is a no win situation.

You didn't ask but if you want to make all those songs show only one genre select grouping by artist, highlight the songs you know are from same album, right click them and select "Info", iTunes will ask you if you want to do multiple song information, click yes. Now mark the check-boxes that are the same, basically artist, album, genre (select), compilation (select yes) and artwork (paste here the album cover you want to be shown). This can be undone later if you change your mind. Click OK.
