Would hip hop have lasted without the music video?

I can't think of another genre that is more dependent on it's style and imagery. I think this has everything to do with the fact Hip Hop came of age at the same time as the music video. It wasn't until Hip Hop was embraced by music video that it really crossed over. For the first time in history, millions of people were introduced to a genre not just sonically but visually as well. So when little Jimmy in Cheyenne Wyoming heard Run-DMC for the first time, he was processing Fedora hats and Adidas sneakers as much as he was the actual music. By contrast, those exposed to "***** music" 35 years earlier only had the music to digest. Of course these artists' style of dress and look would be used to market the music but the bottom line is the music had to stand on it's own first. I'm just wondering where Hip Hop would be now if it never had the video to help kick start it.

Update:

Bk2az: You know nothing about what I know. You clearly don't know how to read. I put "***** music" in quotes for a reason. I know when, where, how, and why hiphop started. I know the difference between rap and hip hop. Your assumptions about me are not correct.

Update 2:

Bk2Az: Please school me! There is nothing that you can tell me that I don't already know. And for you stupid *** information, RUN-DMC are considered pioneers. Where in any of my comments did I give the impression that I need to be schooled?

My name is New Moon Daughter...not Ms. Moon Child. Again, I stated above, you cannot read. Get you thumb outta your *** don't assume **** about anyone.

Update 3:

Sag: Sup Sis? Good Lookin' on having my back on that clown Bk2Az. And I feel you on what you said, if you weren't from the East Cost back in 1979-1982, you had no clue about RHH.

Update 4:

Bk2Az: It's a good thing you left Brooklyn, you'd probably get snuffed for being ignorant. You can't read or spell so I'm done wasting my time with you.

Hey Sis. I agree. Hip Hop is just slightly older than the pervasive MTV and BET. I remember that MTV was the first to play rap videos, BET wouldn't even play them. I think that the music video was instrumental in bringing hip hop to the forefront for the very reasons you named. Middle America had no clue of what was going on, if you weren't living in New York, Jersey. Philly, Boston or somewhere in the North East then you were out of touch. Good observation.

To BK2AZ - You need to fall back off New Moon. Who are you anyway? You failed at your attempt to break down the laws of hip hop. You came in here trying to run someone down and you obviously don't even know the half.

I have to say growing up as a baby in the mid 80's in Brooklyn New york hip hop was an infant and grew to be a grown *** man without the help of the media or video. Like any-music that become popular it came from the the streets and distorted by the few for money. So the culture of HIP HOP or what you want to really say is RAP MUSIC didn't need the media. Like music of the past either rock and roll to jazz they all came from street or urban expressions of pain and suffering. People Don't get it twisted the Rock and Roll you love today was the blues of yesterday so thank the people that really need to be thanked. Just like they are bickering about Rock is white they will be saying that about Rap music 60 years from now and your children will be dancing to something new from the urban pain.

Honestly, i think it would be better, a lot more heart in it, less time spending time recording in front of the camera and more time recording in the studio. Albums would be more consistent too.

I havent seen a new hip hop video on mtv or bet for about 1 year already, the last one I remember watchin was, stronger, listen! and we takin over.

okay...let me clarify a few things for you first. Hip Hop and Rap are not the same thing. Hip Hop is a culture, and Rap is a part of that culture.

Now...if there was no music video, then there are MANY rappers who would not have CAREERS. as a matter of fact, there would be many artist without careers PERIOD...not just rappers, but rock groups and pop groups too!!! now, don't get it twisted...RAP would have been here regardless of a music video because it's music and history for Black people....because it sounds good in the clubs too.

there are plenty of rappers who have substance to what they say and rap about. there are many who make good music as well. the video age changed music in general...not just rap and certainly not just hip hop. in case you didn't know...the hip hop culture (including rap music) existed a long time before videos. Run-DMC is not even part of the originals. they're just one of the first groups to have cross-over appeal, and to be seen in so many homes...but so what???

every rap video is not a good one, so why would you give the video credit for keeping it alive?

i'm not even going to touch your comment about negr* music...that's just plain ignorant.

if i had time...i would take you to school something fierce.

in the future do your research Ms Moon Child

    if you want a debate...then let's debate.

while the music video was instrumental in the popularity, your question implies that without it, an entire culture could possibly have met its demise by now. was you also one of those who thought hip hop/rap music was just a fad?

way before MTV hit the screen, the culture was already prevalent in hoods in "lesser marketed" cities. why then would it be assumed that hip hop could not find it's way eventually to little Jimmy in Cheyenne Wyoming?

would rock have lasted without a video? how about country?

i can understand if you questioned the popularity of it. that would make more sense. However, just like in any other genre, there is an underground scene that seems to hold the responsibility of spreading music, trends, etc to those who may not normally get it (like perhaps in Cheyenne). now obviously that wouldn't have made it as popular as fast, but it would have stood on it's own regardless. it had already been standing for years before MTV ever existed. and what in the world does ANY of that have to do with "***** music"?

now Ms Moon Child (yeah i said it again) if you don't want any friction, then keep your limited opinion to yourself...but don't get all booty hurt and mad at me for responding to your question.

and you do need to be schooled. that's the thing about ignorance. you don't even realize that you need it. so if you really knew what you think you know, then you would know that hip hop would be here with or without some doggone video.

    Now WHAT???

SAG - i'm not going to bother with you.

I think so. Some of the realest rap artists videos don't get played anyway. At least not on MTV and BET and I still listen to them, so yeah.

It MIGHT Have Lasted, But For Sure It Wouldn't Be As Popular As It Is Today.

I don't think hip-hop would have had the same exposure and impact it has today without music videos.

  • In some ways yes and other ways no.

Some artist needed the music video.

Cause live performances ain't their strong hold.
