There are two kinds of people, those who can see both sides to an issue, and those who only see one. To have first-rate intelligence, I believe one must be able to function while holding two opposing ideas.
The depth of perception gives the ability to contrast opposing ideas. As an intelligent man, F. Scott Fitzgerald allows himself to see all of the possible sides to an issue. In the society today, having an open mind is often not an easy ability to achieve. Prayer in schools is a controversial subject because those who argue for it acknowledge the constitution in which freedom from religion is guaranteed. However, others argue that prayer in school violates the law of “church and state”, and also that school is meant for “education, and not religious observance”. I strongly believe that one can see both sides to the issue, and have a strong opinion to one side, yet retain an open mind for the other side.
The natural tendency to take a stance on one side or the other has become almost innate. However, when people settle too fast over one side to an issue, the pros and cons of the situation may not be addressed. In prayer in school, say one automatically believes it should be banished, yet has no supporting evidence as to why. This individual needs to think about each side of the equation.
Fitzgerald reveals that “first-rate intelligence” is linked to the ones who can take a stand on a topic, but never fully discount the other option. Fitzgerald reminds one to be open minded, and see both sides to an issue.
