lexus and toyota car company?

Why are so many people so bias about the best selling car in American and the biggest auto company in the world? Many people say Lexus is boring to drive and yet these people haven't even driven one? They say Lexus is a poor man's luxury automobile and yet the majority of people who have mercedes or bmws can barely afford their vehicles and most are not even rich at all? Why do people want to say bad things about a car company who is the most successful and most reliable?

People always have their favorites. As someone who has owned mostly German cars and has driven Toyota's on multiple occasions including Lexus models I can safely say that most Toyota's are indeed excellent but boring cars to drive. Some of the Lexus's I've driven are great cars but lack the visceral feel of their German counterparts. This doesn't make the Lexus a bad car in my opinion, it's just that I prefer the visceral feel of German engineering vs Japanese.

The knock that Lexus is a poor mans luxury vehicle is also no longer accurate. This might've been true 15 years ago when Lexus first came on the scene and purposely undervalued their cars to get a toe hold in the luxury market but it's certainly no longer true now. A Lexus LS450 is right up there with the S Class Benz and 7 series BMW. As far as people buying cars they can not afford, it's not just BMW and Benz's, there are plenty of Lexus owners in leases/cars they can't afford either.

Why do people do that to GM? It's not just an "Americans don't like Japanese cars" thing, it is a matter of personal preference. I prefer GM products, and I am always talking to people that prefer Toyota over GM and they do the exact same thing. They make arguments against new GM vehicles because of rumors, false information and products from the late 1980s and early 90s. The negative bias does not only affect Toyota.

As for the "poor-man's BMW" thing: That is said, not as a commentary on the wealth of BMW and Benz owners, but as a statement about the cost of a Lexus. Lexus is a luxury car that is comparable (not better, but comparable) to the German companies, but a Lexus can cost less. The same thing was said about the Camaro, the poor man's Corvette.

And Toyota is not the most reliable automaker in the US (nor the most successful). Honda was ranked the most reliable automaker in the US by an April 2008 issues of Consumer Reports. Toyota's quality has begun to falter in the past few years while the quality of American automakers has steadily been increasing. Toyota's US division does not even appear on the US fortune 500, unlike GM or Ford. The only field (that I could find) in which Toyota surpassed GM was in overall revenue, but that could mean that they are making more profit because they pay less for their labor and materials.

Next time you complain about other people showing a bias and not getting facts straight, leave your bias at the door and pick up some facts before you start typing.

That said, Toyota still does make a good product, just not as others.
