System Restore Won't Run?

I have picked up some type virus that seems to have changed my registry. IE won't work properly and runs very slowly. Also every so often, an audio clip starts to play. Some have been music, some news clips, etc. They last about 5 to 10 minutes and stop. It may not happen again for 30 minutes to 4 or 5 hours. I have checked to see what processes are running and it doesn't change when the audio starts so apparently a common file is corrupted.

Anyway, I have tried to run System Restore to restore the registy back to last week before this started (5 days ago). I click that I want to restore to an earlier time and select the date but when I get to the point where I click for it to perform the restore (shutting down Windows, etc), it does nothing. No crash or anything, it just sits there. I realize this still may not solve the problem with the audio clips but I am at wits end as to what to do as I really don't want to have to take it into a shop and pay to get it fixed unless I have to.

I am running XP. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have to write more. System restore from normal mode has 90% chances of failure.

Restore your computer from Safe Mode, that will 100% solve this issue.

    Thanks !!!

If you picked up malware that is causing all this trouble, merely restoring to an earlier time won't likely help, in fact it may promote continued use with the system compromised, which can be very bad because once a system is compromised, NOTHING can be certain about it's security.

Do a system restore ('overwrite' aka 'destructive'; NOT an overlay) to remove any doubt about it. Anything less is rolling the dice.
